How To Use Tor Network To Watch BBC Videos (Outside UK)

I like watch documentary videos like Discovery, National Geographic channel, and BBC channel 4. I am not live in UK so I could not watch this kind video by TV set, and I can not watch them via internet. BBC blocks foreign IP address if you want watch TV program, like Hulu did same way in US. How can I watch BBC TV show? Only way is to change my IP address to a British IP address.

Sounds simple, just use a British proxy but most proxies are not working, even you use a British proxy BBC still can detect your real IP. The best way is use a British VPN, it works very well. The problem is you can find many British VPN services but no any one is free, that means you have to pay for it. Maybe this way is good for British people who live outside of UK but not for me.

After I spent time to search I found a good way to hide my IP address with BBC. How come? Use famous anonymity program - Tor, but it is a dynamic network, how can we change it to a special area IP address? That work is we have to do next. Actually, this step is not easy, you have to do some steps including search and edit a file. Let us go to do that.

Of course, you have to download and install Tor. Then, we have to search British nodes that can change our IP address to British one. Go this page to find some British Tor nodes what we needed.

Beside search bar, click on the pull down next to "CC:", select "GB" and hit "search" button.

Now click on the ">" under "Exit". You now have a list of servers in the UK that are allowed to be used as Exit Servers. Write down all the nicknames of the servers except those marked Unnamed.



Next step is edit a file of Tor. Go to find a file that called "torcc", usually under Vidalia Bundle -> Tor -> torcc. This is a Tor configuration file, you can use Notepad to open it. If empty inside, just write down follow lines or put them on bottom if it has something inside, and save it:

StrictExitNodes 1
exitnodes （list of the nicknames you found on this page, should be separated by commas）


You can direct use this example one:

You can also make more Tor configuration files as you wanted, just go to change the path of piont file (if you do not want just ignore this step).




Ok, next step is running Tor, after a few seconds it will connected network. Check your IP address online make sure your IP address is British one, you can go to Tor Check to find out what your IP is.

If everything is OK, you can go to BBC iPlayer to watch videos.

Another way to find active Tor nodes is click "Network Map", you can find a list of currently opened nodes. Just write download some nicknames under British flag marker, and edit Tor configuration file like above.





This way also works other British Video sites, like ITV. This way is useful now, but sometimes it might break cause changed Tor nodes, just waiting a while it should be continue. Same way that you can search US Tor nodes, and change configuration file to watch Hulu if you live in outside of US.

当然，你需要下载和安装Tor。然后我们要搜索能够替代我们真实IP地址的英国的地址，先到这个网页，在搜索条边上有一个"CC:", 下拉后可选"GB"，然后点击"search"按钮。

接下去是点击"Exit"下面的">"按钮，你可以看到一个可以使用的英国服务器列表，记下所有“nickname“，但不要记下“Unnamed“的服务器。

下一步是修改一个Tor文件，该文件名为"torcc"，通常是在这个路径下：Vidalia Bundle -> Tor -> torcc。这是一个Tor配置文件，你可以使用Notepad（记事簿）来打开它。如果里面时空的，可以写入下面的句子，如果里面已经有什么东西可以在底部写入这些句子，然后退出保存。

如果你想要制作多个Tor配置文件的话，可以很方便的将其指向一个配置文件，这可以在设置中进行更改（如果你并不需要的话可以忽视这一步）。

好了，下一步是运转Tor软件。稍等片刻，它会连接上网络。你需要到网络上检查一下你的IP地址的确是英国地址，到Tor Check就可以准确测定出你所使用的IP地址。

如果一切正常的话，可以到BBC iPlayer上观看你喜欢的视频。

另一个寻找它的网络节点的方法，点击软件界面上的"Network Map"，它会显示一个目前正在网络上开放的节点列表，记下英国标记后面的节点名字，与前面的方法一样输入到Tor配置文件中即可。

这个方法也适用于观看其他的英国视频网站，如ITV。这种方法在目前是有效的，但是在使用过程中可能会由于更换节点而断线。只要稍等片刻就可以恢复。如果你不居住在美国的话，也可以用相同的方法来搜索美国的Tor节点，修改配置后就可以观看Hulu上的视频。
