VLC Player is a very good open source standalone media player, it can play almost media files without install different CODEC packs, it built these CODECs in player. The newest version is VLC 1.1.0 now, I want to tell a good point of this player, it can play video where from popular video site - Youtube directly.
It is simple, just open your VLC player, click "Media" from main toolbar, choose "Open Network Stream...". Paste Youtube video address into network URL bar, like this one:

Click "Play" button. It will play video directly.
